Community Health Workers perform a broad range of health related functions and play an important role in bridging the gap between cultures and health care systems. Community Health Worker Training


12 week program training program that includes 6 weeks of classroom instruction and 6 weeks of experiential learning through a 100-hour internship. Certified Community Health Worker (CHW)


This training is a 160-hour competency-based training program as part of the application for certification. Each course covers eight competencies: Communication, Teaching, Interpersonal Skills, Service Coordination, Capacity Building, Advocacy, Organization, and Knowledge Base. The center will offer continuing education units (CEUs) for certified CHWs and intermediate level CHW training such as motivational interviewing, patient navigation, chronic disease management and quality improvement. Additionally, the center will offer training for providers and facilities who seek to employ CHWs and need hiring guides, guides to supervising CHWs, and scope of practice information. Certification courses and continuing education are offered in-person, online, or using a hybrid version combining both methods. Note: CHW Bridge to Excellence CHW Certification Course is certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and is only able to grant DSHS certification to individuals who reside in Texas and are 18 years or older. However, non-Texas residents will be eligible to obtain a certificate of completion.

Training Paths and Standards

Path 1, New CHWs, is for Community Health Workers who seek certification through education & training, or who are just starting their career. Applicants must fulfill the following criteria: 

  • At least 16 years old.
  • Training through a vendor approved by the CHW Advisory Body.
    • This training should include completion of an internship. 
  • At least two references commenting on CHW work experience.
    • One reference should come from a professional the applicant has worked with and one from a community member. 
  • 1000 hours proof of experience as a CHW within 3 years of application date.

Path 2, Experienced CHWs, is for Community Health Workers who seek certification through professional experience.  Applicants must fulfill the following criteria: 

  • At least 16 years old.
  • At least two references commenting on CHW work experience.
    • One reference should come from a professional the applicant has worked with and one from a community member.
  • 2000 hours proof of experience as a CHW within 3 years of application date.
